Creating a minor house?

I somewhat understand the procedures with creating a great house, or even a custom character within a great house. But what about an off shoot of the main house?
Example, Starks and Karstarks.
Karlon Stark was awarded land from his father. I assume that he was a younger brother who probably wouldn't have inherited much had his father not made him a lord in his own right.
I would like to make an offshoot of House Tyrell but avoid having this great fiasco of having to justify such a huge house as with the case of Karstarks who have one thousand years of history.
My question is what would be a good way to have lands, titles and some form of house under the Tyrells. Preferably tied to the Terrell's financially both in what they must pay the Tyrell's but also in the Tyrell's support. Could it be a cousin who shares a name, but only a distant claim to the family lands.
Alternatively is it possible to marry into a family from the male line but adopt the female's name. Meaning a male by the name of "what ever" and a female Tyrell with the children taking the Tyrell's name for what ever reason. Would this work at all? Or under certain circumstances could this work?
Example:
Two hundred years ago a small yet wealthy family's heir marries a younger daughter of the Tyrell's. During a war or rebellion (insert excuse to kill some people yay!) the lands of said family are sacked, their holds raised and people butchered.
The children safe with the mother in high garden while their father, grandfather and a large portion of Kingsmen are slaughtered always remaining loyal to high garden and her people to the very end.
In the aftermath of the war, the lord of High garden adopted the children and allowed them their mother's name.
