Name: Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort
Age: 51
Place of Birth: The Dreadfort
Current Place of Residence: The Dreadfort
House: Bolton
Family:
Unnamed first wife
Bethany Ryswell (2nd wife)
"Fat" Walda Frey (3rd wife)
Domeric Bolton (Son, Deceased)
Ramsey Snow (Bastard son & Heir)
Appearance:
Lord Bolton keeps his body practically hairless and smooth, a fact which makes some effort to hide and one that known to only a few of his servants...all of whom know better than to talk behind their liege's back. He is of average size and is described by many as "not handsome but not quite plain" with his only noticeable feature being his eerie eyes, which are as pale and strange as two white moons. Jaime Lannister once described them as paler than stone, darker than milk. His skin is pasty white, most likely due to the leechings.
Garb: Roose's outfits tend to be well made and fitted. Leathers and cloth used in equal measure for tailored boots and the like, while the colours tend to lean towards those of a darker shade, greys, blacks...nothing cheerful at all.
Height: 5'10
Weight: 163lbs
Personality:
Roose Bolton can behave every inch the high born noble Lord when required to do so and though he is often mild-mannered, beneath this façade he is cold as stone, calculating, and capable of great cruelty. Whispers of his practices reach all corners of Westeros but few if any have the gall to speak out loud what they have heard.
Roose is a very patient man with a cold cunning that he uses to further his own ends. He is not above stabbing his allies and friends in the back if it will further his own power base and while this maybe the case he often works it in such a way as to alleviate any suspicions of his involvement. Possessing a skill for strategy that has served him well in the past and a calculating nature, Lord Bolton often attempts to plan for all eventualities he can foresee.
He speaks with a spider soft at all times, never raising his voice even in anger, forcing those who listen to do so intently.
Likes:
Dislikes:
Weapons: A Castle forged steel longsword.
Armour: When required Roose wears a black mail coat with a leather hauberk over the top, with simple leather gloves and boots to finish the armour. If the need arises he also owns a set of darkened steel plate, crafted to fit piece by piece and offer greater protection than his simple mail coat.
Skills:
Game of Thrones Roose Bolton has been playing the game for many years and as such has come to understand many of the nuances of the royal court, and the Great Houses in general. He rarely speaks a word out of place and knows in which ear to plant the seeds of an idea or sometimes...the seeds of doubt. While he would take the throne for himself if he could he knows it is beyond his grasp and so plays the game so that he may position himself in a place of ever increasing power, wealth and importance.
Swordsman Roose is an able swordsman but his prime days are long behind him. He practices little these days and while his skills are only slightly diminished, the edge that comes with constant practice has been lost.
Strategist Lord Bolton has a solid understanding of military tactics and is often able to predict with some accuracy how his enemy will react to certain feints and posturing. He knows when to advance to take advantage of a position of strength and knows when a battle is lost and fighting on would be a simple waste of manpower.
Torture The whispers speak of a sadistic practice that goes on within the walls of the Dreadfort. If they only knew the half of it they wouldn't make light of the matter. Roose has continued a family practice that travels back through time, striving ever more for perfection of an art that brings him joy. Amongst the horrendous acts is the one people whisper of the most and where the family emblem comes from...the art of flaying skin from flesh.
Reputation While not a skill, Roose Bolton is the Lord and Master of the Dreadfort, and regardless of whether all the rumours are true or not there is a certain element of fear that comes with the family name and its holdings.
Weaknesses:
Power before friends Lord Bolton is under no illusions that to succeed in Westeros you need allies, however he also knows that sometimes switching your allegiance can gain you many favours. While not a mercenary, he values personal gain above remaining friends...unless breaking his alliances would put him in a position of weakness.
The Leechlord While he believes that the constant draining of blood through leechings keeps him healthy and well, the time required and the weakness that follows resulting from blood loss leaves him lethargic and reduces his ability to respond to sudden events.
History:
Lord Roose Bolton, commonly known as 'The Leech Lord' (but never within his earshot) rules from the ancestral Bolton Castle, the Dreadfort. Unlike most other Lords in the North, he still practices the tradition of 'First Night.' Even though himself married with a son, when Roose came upon a miller's wife that caught his eye and he discovered they had been married without his knowledge, Roose hanged the miller for not informing him and raped the woman under the body. She would later give birth to his bastard Ramsay.
Roose Bolton has long been one of the most powerful Lords under House Stark. When the War of the Usurper broke out, Roose fought under Eddard Stark and was there for the battle of the Trident itself when Rhaegar Targaryen was shattered. When the victors were picking the field, a wounded Ser Barristan Selmy was brought before the rebellion leaders. Roose suggested Ser Barristan be killed, but Robert Baratheon disagreed.
After the war Roose returned to the Dreadfort where he, as was his manner of doing things, ruled quietly for years. His son Dominic took after him greatly, quiet but accomplished. Two years ago when Dominic passed away due to a 'bad belly,' Roose had his bastard Ramsay brought to court and made him his unofficial heir. The Leech Lord always suspected Ramsay killed Dominic with poison.
When Robb Stark called his banners Roose responded and was given command of the entire foot and some of the horse, which he led in the battle of Green Fork before retreating to Moat Caitlin. It was also during this war he married Walda Frey and received her weight in silver from Lord Walder Frey as a dowry. After word reached the camp that the Iron Born had taken Winterfell, Roose suggested his son Ramsay could re-take Winterfell with the men that could not be mustered in the short time Robb had given to raise the banners. Robb gave the word and Roose had Ramsay siege and take Winterfell, capturing Theon Greyjoy in the process. However, Roose has already determined that the Stark cause is lost and has begun plotting with Tywin Lannister.
