Appearance:
Garb: Linen, silk and leather are what Black Walder usually wears. The Twins are not in the warmest location so he's often warmly wrapped. Over the years he has grown fond of a little weight on his shoulders to his cloaks usually have a thick fur mantle around the shoulders. He wears jackets and boots of leather, with what he wears on his chest and legs more usually silk and linen. He has no particular fondness for one colour over another, but blues and greens turn up often enough. He wears the sigil of House Frey upon his breast often enough too.
Height: 5'11
Weight: 170 lbs
Personality: Black Walder Frey is well known to be aggressive and and stern. While many in the Twins can fade into obscurity if they do not stand out in some manner, everyone knows Black Walder. Many of his cousins dislike or even fear him but the women favour him, it is well known he has bedded some of his cousins such as Fair Walda and Amerei, and whispered he has bedded his brothers wives and even Lord Walder's seventh wife, Annara.
Outside the Twins he's more well known for his volatile nature. The Frey's are an unpopular family and among the forces of the North and the Riverlands, Black Walder is likely the most unpopular. He's quick to put voice to something he disagrees with, but his effectiveness as a soldier is generally recognized.
Likes:
Dislikes:
Weapons: Black Walder's weapon of choice is a Castle forged steel greatsword. It is well made but ultimately rather unremarkable.
Armour: Black Walder wears a suit of scalemail with a breastplate under a tabard that bears the sigil of House Frey. It is often worn with a wolf skin cloak.
Skills:
Soldier: Black Walder was trained by the Master-At-Arms of the Twins and is the most dangerous of the Freys. In the war thus far he has continued to establish himself, being paired with Smalljon Umber to ensure the surrender of The Crag. While the bastard sword is his weapon of preference, he's also known to make use of a crossbow. Due to his competence, Black Walder is one of chief Commander's of the significant Frey force and certainly a better strategist then most of his family and peers.
Cunning: Black Walder is well educated and also possesses the Frey cunning. He can be devious and underhanded combined with a willingness to perform all manner of cruelties to further himself or House Frey. Although easy to provoke to anger, he has proven himself capable of holding himself back for the greater purpose.
Weaknesses:
He's a Frey: Being a Frey he has a reputation, being called 'Black' Walder gives him a worst one and making no effort to befriend people gives him an even worst one. Black Walder's reputation gives people reason to constantly suspect him and anything he does is under more scrutiny than if it had been performed by one of his more obscure family members or a more respected individual. Quite frankly Black Walder is tolerated because of his competency and Stark's requirement for the Frey force.
History:
'Black' Walder Frey was born in 263 AL. Even in his youngest years it was apparent the sort of man he would eventually become. He was always assertive, always a bully. His natural aggression made him more dangerous when trained by the Master-At-Arms of the Twins. His irascible temper and stern attitude eventually earned him the nickname 'Black' Walder Frey, to aide distinguish him among the other Walders that lived at the Crossing.
By the time of Robert's Rebellion he was a man grown, already infamous among his family. He was among the host that arrived at the battle of the Trident and thus he never really fought in the war. Outside of 'safe' sparring with his brothers and cousins in the Twins courtyard the only fighting he saw was dealing with bandits in the Frey lands.
By the beginning of the 'War of Five Kings' his place in House Frey was ever stronger. The women of House Frey favoured him, perhaps because his dangerous reputation excited them, perhaps because it was rumoured he would be Lord of the Twins one way or another some day. Whatever the reason, some Frey wives went to his bed more often then to their own and some of his cousins found way to his bed too. When Lord Walder accepted Robb Stark's terms and House Frey gave its swords to the King-in-the-North, Black Walder went with them and has arguably proved himself the most capable Frey. With Robb's marriage to the healing woman, the presence of House Frey swords among the Stark host has come into question.
