Name: Oberyn Martell
Age: 41
Place of Birth: Dorne
Current Place of Residence: Dorne
House: House Martell
Family:
Doran (Brother)
Mors (Brother - Dead)
Olyvar (Brother - Dead)
Elia (Sister - Dead)
Sand Snakes
Obara Sand. Daughter of a whore of Oldtown.
Nymeria Sand. Called Lady Nym, her mother was a noblewoman from Old Volantis.
Tyene Sand. Daughter of a septa.
Sarella Sand. Daughter of a trader from the Summer Isles.
Elia Sand. Daughter of Oberyn's paramour Ellaria Sand
Obella Sand. Daughter of Ellaria Sand
Dorea Sand. Daughter of Ellaria Sand
Appearance:
Garb: Oberyn's everyday attire is very typical for one hailing from Dorne's great houses. He is privy to satin and silk robes in times of leisure, jeweled belts and flowing sleeves. Extravagance translates to status. In battle, Oberyn dons armor heavily enameled with brilliantly colored metals such as copper, silver, and gold.
Height: 6'1
Weight: A muscular 13 stone.
Personality: The Red Viper lives up to his name. He is quick-witted with a barbed tongue, filled with lust that he does little to restrain. Though diminishing with his age, Oberyn's passion shows through his legacy of bastard children littered across both Westeros and Essos. Some would even be so bold as to question whether women are the only objects of his desire.
His lust does not go unaccounted for, however. He has eight bastard daughters, referred to as the Sand Snakes, and unlike most great lords, Oberyn has made sure that all of them were cared for and taught to defend themselves. He takes great pride in his legacy.
Oberyn is not unkind, but some find his brash sense of humor to be offending. Oberyn's sarcasm is lost on many. He treats other nobles with familiarity (some would say he is too bold), regardless of how well he actually know them.
Likes:
Dislikes:
Weapons: The Red Viper is happy with most well-balanced steel weapons, and as such carries a paired dagger and curved sword on either hip. Both he keeps well-polished, hilts jeweled and gilded. Were it more convenient to carry upon his person, he would no doubt prefer to wield his equally illustrious spear, which stands 6 feet tall.
Armour: Boldly colored metals and jewels adorn the Red Viper's breastplate. It serves as a symbol of status, and he likes to think the extravagance distracts and unsettles his opponents.
Skills: Like most of high birth, Oberyn Martell is trained in the art of war. He is decently proficient in the use of most conventional weapons, but his true skill lies with the spear. Oberyn boasts to be among the most dangerous men in Westeros when armed with a spear. True to his namesake, Oberyn is said to be fond of a poisoned blade in battle.
After riding with the Second Sons, he formed his own mercenary company. This lends to his knack for leadership as well (though he can hardly stay interested in anything long enough for it to count).
Weaknesses: The Red Viper loses interest in things very quickly. There is so much potential in him, but he often grows bored in his pursuits. Unfortunately, he rarely reaps the fruits of his labor because of this.
Oberyn is arrogant. To a fault, most would agree. If it came to glory, there is not a knight in all the Seven Kingdoms he would hesitate to engage. This often puts him in dangerous situations.
Perhaps a byproduct of growing up with nobility, Oberyn has never had cause to want. Being a Martell means that he has always been provided for. Being a younger brother, he has never had to be accountable as a Lord-to-be would. This causes him to be extremely self-entitled.
History: Born in 258 AL at Sunspear, Oberyn was fostered at Sandstone, the stronghold of the Yronwood family. Even in his youth, Oberyn was known for his promiscuity. At sixteen, he was found in bed with Lord Ormond Yronwood paramour. Lord Ormond challenged him to a duel, thinking it would be no difficult task to put this youth in his place. The duel was to first blood, being that Oberyn was of high birth. Both took wounds, but Lord Ormond's wounds festered and killed him in the end. Rumors spread that Oberyn used a poisoned blade in the duel, and the name Red Viper has stuck with him ever since.
Traveling extensively throughout the Free Cities, Oberyn picked up many tricks and a dazzling skillset concerning the more exotic tastes of the world. During his time spent in Oldtown, he actually forged quite a few links of a maester's chain before succumbing to boredom. During his time spent in the Disputed Lands, the Red Viper fought for the Second Sons for a spell before departing to start his own mercenary company.
Some hold that he beds both men and women, and has begotten bastard girls all over Dorne. They are referred to as the Sand Snakes, and do not grow up wanting (as most bastards do). He has had a hand in raising all of them, and the last four of them were begotten on his paramour Ellaria Sand.
It was planned when he was young that he would be married to Cersei Lannister, but during a visit to King's Landing, a grieving Tywin Lannister (mourning the death of his wife Joanna Lannister) insulted and spurned them.
Oberyn has participated in many tourney's across the Seven Kingdoms, doing quite well against most knights in the tilts. The only knights to give him trouble were Rhaegar Targaryen and Barristan Selmy. In fact, there is an ongoing feud between House Tyrell and House Martell, which lends itself to the time Prince Oberyn crippled Willas Tyrell in a tourney (though Willas holds no grudge).
Oberyn was very close to his sister, the Princess Elia. After the Sack of King's Landing, Dorne heard the news of Elia's death. After some investigation, the Prince discovered that she was raped and murdered by a Lannister knight, Gregor Clegane. He desires revenge strongly. He and his brother Doran, the current Prince of Dorne, were involved in a secret plot to bring down Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters in the process. They signed a secret pact promising the hand of his niece, Arianne Martell, to Viserys Targaryen. The plot was foiled, however, due to the death of both King Robert and Viserys.
Oberyn is currently in Dorne, ruling over the Dornish lands in his brother stead due to his illness. Nymeria would be doing this, however she is in Kings Landing on the small council to preserve relations.
