Name: Garlan Tyrell
Age: 27
Place of Birth: Highgarden
Current Place of Residence: Highgarden
House: Tyrell
Family:
Leonette Fossoway (wife)
Mace Tyrell (father)
Alerie Hightower (mother)
Willas Tyrell (older brother)
Loras Tyrell (younger brother)
Margaery Tyrell (younger sister)
Appearance: i.imgur.com/MMXza.jpg [/img]
Garb:Garlan favors light tunics and breeches in the colors of House Tyrell. As a son of the Lord of the Reach he can have made anything he should need however. Many of his outfits bear not just the rose of House Tyrell, but his personal sigil of two roses on a green field. His favored cloak is lengthy and deep green, edged with golden embroidery and bearing his doubled rose upon the back.
At times however he will wear leathers (see image), such as when on the hunt and outside of Highgarden and other castles.
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235 lbs
Personality: Willas the studious, the educated, the kind. Loras the flamboyant, the renowned, the rash. Margaery the beautiful, the shrewd, the cunning. Garlan resembles each of his siblings, and yet he is completely different. Oft one would find him in the stables with Willas, examining and studying the destriers and coursers. On the morrow he would be sparring with Tyrell bannermen in the yard alongside Loras. That evening you might even find him discussing the politics of the Reach alongside Lady Margaery. Each has their own niche to which they devote themselves. Garlan however does not. He is not as educated as Willas, nor as flamboyant as Loras, nor does he plot like Margaery.
Garlan maintains an outer facade of courtesy and kindness, but conversations with him rarely will procede beyond superficial matters into personal discussions. Those whom have made it through his walls and whom he counts as a friend know the true man. A mirthful fellow, always apt to lighten the mood with a jest or call for more to drink should a conversation turn too dour.
Garlan does not seek out fame or glory. It was a choice he made the day he found that Willas was crippled. Rumors had already begun to circle that Mace was looking to pass over Willas as his heir and Garlan would not hear of such an act. Let Loras win the glory and acclaim. Mace might pass over one son, but never two. At Willas’s request Garlan does not shy from situations which may cause him to be better known, but to seek them he refuses to do.
To sum up Garlan in one word would be to call him content. What is to come will come to pass. Should peace reign then he would live into old age in whatever position his elder brother should ask of him. Should war ravage the lands then he will ride forth at his Lord’s command.

Dislikes:
Weapons: Garlan’s favored weapon is a bastard sword. Both the pommel and quillons are decorated with elaborate roses by the smiths of Highgarden. The blade itself is of the finest castle-wrought steel. A twisting vine pattern has been acid etched along the length of the blade by maesters at the Citadel. (ex. Image)
Armour: Garlan has a suit of full plate, well decorated with rose motifs, although not nearly as ostentatious as the armor of his younger brother Loras.
He also possesses a lighter suit of chain-mail and heavy leather that he will spar in from time to time.
Skills: Warrior - Garlan is pious enough regarding the Seven, but it is the Warrior to whom Garlan is most devout. Garlan is a fierce warrior, and few alive can match his skill with a blade. He routinely spars against three or four men to mimic the conditions of battle. His younger brother Loras is a tourney knight of great renown, but even Loras will freely acclaim Garlan as the greater sword in the family.
Garlan is a rather large man and he has the physical prowess that usually comes with such size. The brothers Lannister, both dogs, Greatjon Umber, and the Strongboar are mightier than he, beyond those however he is unmatched.
He is accustomed to combat both afoot and from horseback, but he prefers to fight on foot. This does not mean he is a poor fighter from the back of his steed though.
Garlan is well trained in the arts of war and is capable with a number of weapons beyond the blade. He can throw both spears and axes with a fair degree of accuracy and power, although the his skill with a bow is little more than enough to avoid embarrassment at the butts. Much success has he had on the hunt with a spear, and he varies his weapons in sparring to include maces, axes, and the sword. He could likely defeat almost any challenger with any weapon, but in a life and death battle the sword would be his choice.
Knight - Garlan squired for his uncle Baelor Hightower in his youth. It was he whom gave Baelor the nickname "Brightsmile" after the grin upon Baelor's face when Garlan first disarmed him during sparring. Baelor was a fine warrior, but it was not solely in the arts of war that he tutored Garlan. Garlan was taught to obey the laws of chivalry, to protect the helpless, safeguard women, and do honor to his house with his every act. "Any man can be made a knight, it is a rare man whom deserves it," was one of Baelor's favorite aphorisms. Garlan is a font of courtesy and kindness at court, nor would he harm a yielded man upon the field. It is against his very ethos which Baelor engraved upon his soul.
Intelligent - A benefit of squiring in Oldtown was the presence of the Citadel. Baelor ensured that Garlan was instructed by many of the greatest minds of the realm. He counted no less than three archmaesters among his tutors during his time there, and spent many days at the citadel with acolytes and novices. Garlan learned much in his time there, but he had more interesting studies in the training yard. It is doubtful he could ever have made it as a maester (should he have wished it), but he is still a rather sharp minded and free-thinking individual.
Weaknesses:
Seeks Not Fame - Garlan is a doughty warrior whom could have great renown through melee victories much as Loras triumphs in the lists. However Garlan is uncomfortable with such attention. He is not shy persay, so much as he does not like acclamation. Oftentimes he will speak his thoughts to his brothers and allow them to bring it to the Lord of the Reach, allowing them to gain stature in their fathers eyes. Should Garlan become a renowned knight such as Barristan Selmy or Arthur Dayne it would become a source of embarrassment for him. Humbleness suits him, he will not turn from glory should it lie in his path, but to seek it is Loras' aim.
Knight of Summer – Garlan may not seek out glory, but that does not mean he does not enjoy justly earned laurels. War is a game. With Loras at his side it is a foregone conclusion that the young brothers should earn themselves reputations alongside the greatest knights of the realm. The reality of war, the death, the bloody mess upon the field of battle, all the widows and orphans left behind. They are not even thought of. Should the time come when the Rose banners march Garlan will take his place at the head of the column with joy in his heart and a smile on his face.
Crippled Brother – Woe unto the man whom mocks the eldest son of Mace Tyrell in the presence of Garlan. Willas was protective of the plump boy as a youth, and the injustice done unto his brother has only served to deepen the bond between the two. Garlan is typically calm and collected, the one sensitive subject that is sure to stoke his anger however is his brother. Twice Garlan has crossed blades with men whom made jest of Willas’ condition, and twice he has left men bleeding and unconscious in their friends arms.
History: In 272 AL the union of houses Hightower and Tyrell was blessed with the birth of a second son, Garlan. The realm was at peace and a great feast was held in Highgarden to welcome the newest child of the Lord of the Reach into the world. Baelor Hightower, heir to Oldtown and eldest brother of the mother had recently returned from the hunt and had with him a magnificent boar which he gifted to Mace Tyrell. Mace declared that he would grant Baelor a boon in return for the gift, but all Baelor asked was that when the boy came of age he should be Baelor’s squire.
Time passed quickly for young Garlan until his tenth nameday. The Stark heir had dared to threaten the Dragon Prince and had paid the price, along with his father, friends, and numerous retainers. War had broken out with only Dorne and the Reach, foes as they often were, being the only lands loyal to the throne. The banners were called and Garlan could often be found staring out the windows at the forest of banners flying outside the walls of Highgarden.
Garlan was twelve when Mace returned from war. The years had not treated the young boy well. He was plump and appeared set to follow in the steps of his uncle Garth the Gross. Mace was displeased but his attention was occupied by the infants Loras and Margaery, whom quickly became the favored children.
He was nine years old and on a ride through the countryside with Willas and a few friends when a farmer made jest of his weight. It seemed as though he would soon be Garlan the Gross like his uncle. Later that day though Willas and Garlan were walking through the halls when a rat scurried out in front of them, Garlan yelped and jumped backwards, dropping the books he was carrying. Which just so happened to fall on the rat and kill it. “Garlan the Gallant indeed” jested out Willas, “You slew the foul beast”. Willas then spread the name around before Garlan became known as the Gross.
Garlan knew why his brother had given him the nickname and felt embarrassed that it had been necessary. A week later the master at arms had found the young boy waiting in the training yard at dawn. Garlan proved to posess an aptitude for swordplay and other tests of arms, even proving a match for Willas, whom was two years his elder. At the age of twelve he was sent off to Oldtown where he was to squire for his uncle Baelor.
Garlan thrived in Oldtown, Baelor was a good knight and a good man. He ensured that Garlan gained skill not just in the weapons of a warrior, but in the weapons of the mind as well. The proximity of the Citadel allowed Garlan to indulge his thirst for knowledge which he had suppressed in his pursuit of skill at arms in Highgarden. Baelor became a second father to Garlan in those years, and played a great part in molding Garlan into the man he would become.
Garlan was eighteen and newly knighted when word came that Willas was crippled during a tourney by the Red Viper of Dorne. Baelor could not restrain the brash young knight who rode out the gates of Oldtown on a quest of vengeance. It was Willas whom traveled in a wheelhouse to stop Garlan on the road. It was Willas whom forbid Garlan to seek vengeance against Oberyn Martell. Garlan bowed to the will of his brother, and in the years to come would thank the Seven for his brother’s actions that day, knowing what great pain Willas must have endured to stop him.
In 294 AL Garlan was married to Lady Leonette Fossoway of the green apple Fossoways. In recent years Garlan has spent much of his time in Highgarden and Oldtown. He attends many tourneys to cheer on his brother Loras, although Garlan typically deigns not to compete himself.

Sweat beaded on the face of the young squire as he was yet again forced back across the yard. “Keep your eyes open! Head up! Don’t react, make me react!” yelled the knight as he unleashed a flurry of blows that threatened to drive the blade from his squire’s hands with every contact. And then it happened. As swift as an arrow the young man had caught a downward swing on his blade, and then charged into his opponent. The knight was an experienced warrior, and a rather large man at that. Certainly the squire could not hope to triumph if it came down to a wrestling match. Then the dust cleared, somehow the young man had rolled away, and rose with a blade in either hand.
“Yield.” Laughed the knight with a large grin “I yield. Hah, I never saw that coming. Next time I’ll keep the advice to myself. Well done lad. Your parents would be proud of you, I know your grandfather and I both are.”
“It’s about time, you’ve only clobbered me back and forth across the yard for the past four hours. What do you say we head to the Great Hall and see what grandfather is having for dinner Uncle Brightsmile?” asked the young squire.
“Brightsmile eh? I suppose it will do. The ladies will love it won’t they? Although I’m not sure how my wife will feel. At least I’m not Garth the Gross like your other uncle. Baelor Brightsmile, I like the sound of that. Of course I am still outmatched by Garlan the Gallant,” jested the knight. “I do feel hungry, perhaps a quick stop in the kitchens for some of those delicious pastries the new chef makes. Then we can procede to dinner in the Great Hall. Father will forgive us for the delay when he hears how you fared today. If he ever stops laughing at me that it.”
With that Baelor Hightower and Garlan Tyrell disappeared into the kitchens of the Hightower. A good day ending witth a fitting name for the knightly heir to Oldtown, and a growing future ahead of the young son of the Rose Lord.
